Clarke Central listed among nation's finest
Clarke Central High School was named one of the top-performing schools in the country this week by U.S. News & World Report for giving all of its students - though many of them come from low-income homes - the tools they need to be successful
Clarke Central ranks among the top 3 percent of high schools in the nation for low-income students' proficiency on standardized tests and participation and performance in Advanced Placement classes. Only nine other Georgia schools received the publication's silver medal, and only one school - the John S. Davidson Fine Arts School in Augusta - received a gold medal, an award given to just 100 schools in the United States.
The U.S. News ranking is based on data collected from the U.S. Department of Education and state departments of education for 48 states and the District of Columbia.
More than 21,000 high schools were included in the analysis, which was conducted by Standard & Poor's School Evaluation Services in conjunction with the Education Sector, a Washington, D.C., think tank.
Using a set of formulas to evaluate how well low-income students perform compared to the average student, the report provides an unbiased picture of how well public schools serve all of their students - from the poorest to the richest - in giving them basic skills and preparing them for college-level work, according to U.S. News.
Clarke Central received the award from Newsweek in 2007 and 2008.
