    Counseling program activities

Classroom Instruction: lessons throughout the year that are focused on different areas of social-emotional learning, such as, e.g., empathy, mindfulness, resiliency, and goal-setting. Classroom lessons will include the Second Step curriculum’s Bullying Prevention Unit and Child Protection Unit.

Small group counseling: provides a safe environment for a small group of students who share similar issues or concerns, and are willing to work together to learn new skills and to gain support from their peers. Some topics may include school success, building friendships, grief/loss, and anger management.

*If your child is invited to participate in a small group that has a topical focus (that will meet on a short-term, weekly basis), a permission form will be sent home for consent to participate.

Individual counseling: short-term sessions are provided, one-on-one, with a student in a safe and confidential setting. The focus is on problem-solving, whatever the issue or concern that the student may have. Goals, strategies, and progress are discussed during these sessions. Student check-ins will also take place to ensure that things are going well, or if the school counselor observes that a student may benefit from a check-in.

*Confidentiality Statement: Sessions remain confidential unless the individual discloses that someone was hurting them, they want to hurt someone else, they want to hurt themselves, or if they give permission to share with another trusted adult.

What are some of the reasons that I may want to contact the school counselor?

    • When your child is having academic, behavioral, or social/emotional challenges,
    • When sudden changes in your child’s life begin to interfere with his or her behavior and/or academic performance,
    • When you want to arrange a meeting to discuss concerns that you or your child may have,
    • When you want to discuss your child’s progress,
    • When you want information about community resources or other additional support for your child or your family.
