Walter Avila, a senior at Cedar Shoals High School, has been selected as a 2019 QuestBridge Scholar and has been awarded a full scholarship to attend Emory University in the Fall 2019. Out of 16,248 applicants nationwide, Walter was one of only 1,044 students that was matched with a university based on an established process. Over the course of four years, the scholarship Walter has received will amount to $300,000.00.

QuestBridge Scholarship partner colleges use a combination of their own funds as well as state and federal aid to fund the scholarship. This scholarship is offered as part of a generous financial aid package provided by the QuestBridge college partner that covers the cost of attendance, including:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Room and board
  • Books and supplies
  • Travel expenses

College Match Scholarship packages:

  • Have NO parental contribution
  • Have NO student loans
  • May contain a student contribution in the form of Federal work-study, summer work, or student savings.

Walter is also a semi-finalist for the very selective Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship, making him eligible for another 4-year renewable $40,000 scholarship.

"This is a great accomplishment for Walter and speaks volumes about Cedar Shoals and the teachers and staff that have guided him throughout his education here," says Counselor Courtni Reese.
