Girls Empowering Movement (GEM)

We are pleased to announce that Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School has been selected as an official school site for the Girls Empowering Movement Program (GEM)!

The program will not officially kick off until June 25-27, 2021 at the GEM Summit, but we are very excited that the planning process has already begun.

Our school stood out among the many qualified applicants and is one of only 49 schools selected for the program. A total of 120 official GEM sites will represent Georgia in the implementation of this multi-year physical activity program designed by girls, for girls and funded by the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation. Our own, Tammi Johnson will be the adult facilitator, and will help guide the work and the girls will be empowered to lead the program.

Fourteen middle school girl leaders from across Georgia, The GEM Leadership Team, have already been involved in developing this program. Their insight has been invaluable. The program name and logo were both created by these girl leaders. They are now focused on providing their input on the toolkit and trainings. These resources will guide GEM girl groups in the creation of innovative solutions to engaging in fun, personalized physical activity that results in improved fitness, long-term health and more physical activity opportunities for girls.
