Subject: School Attendance Expectations
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are looking forward to a great year with our students at school! Research tells us that students who miss even a few days of school are at greater risk of facing academic challenges and academic failures. Our 2023-2024 goal is to ensure that 100% of our students attend school regularly and every student has 9 or fewer days of absences during this school year. Our Hilsman attendance motto is “9 Days or Less for Student Success!” Because attendance is crucial to the success of your student, please make sure that your student arrives at school, on time, every day unless your student has a contagious illness or is running a fever. When students are absent for a legitimate reason, a parent or guardian must communicate with the school in writing within five (5) days the reason for the absence. Please email Christmas Tillotson, Registrar, at tillotsonc@clarke.k12.ga.us with the date and reason for the absence.
Georgia law allows a student to be excused from school for the following reasons:
• Personal Illness
• Illness or death in the immediate family
• Mandates by court order or order of a governmental agency
• Recognized religious holidays observed by the student’s faith
• Conditions rendering attendance impossible or hazardous to the student’s safety
• Registering to vote or voting in a public election
• Visitation with a parent who is in the military preparing to deploy to a combat zone or who is on home leave
• Students who are at least 12 years of age and who are serving as pages of the Georgia General Assembly
We have included a chart with this letter that will help you keep track of your student’s absences. If your child is at risk of missing more than 9 days of school, please feel free to contact your student's grade level counselor for assistance. We will be monitoring each student’s attendance closely and contacting families if a student has more than 4 absences. We are here to support you so please contact us if you need anything at all.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kenneth Vaughan, Principal
