Seventeen CCSD middle and high school students have qualified 12 projects for the upcoming Georgia Science and Engineering Fair. The district had a strong showing in the Northeast Georgia regional fair at Piedmont University on Feb. 7, as more than 40 students from Burney-Harris-Lyons, Clarke, and Coile middle schools and Cedar Shoals High School won medals and special awards.

 

The students listed below qualified for the state fair, which will be held March 26-28 at The Classic Center in downtown Athens. Click here for a full list of regional fair results!

 

Junior Division (middle schools)

 

·      Kennedy Gates of Clarke Middle won first place in the Biochemistry category.

·      Ma’Kayla Johnson of Coile Middle, Sadie Smith of Clarke Middle, and Ryn Brown of Clarke Middle finished first through third, respectively, in the Chemistry category. Brown’s project also won the Piedmont Rising Researcher Award and an American Chemical Society Award. Johnson’s project won the Naval Science Award. Clark Crawford and Trevor Johnson of BHL Middle also won an American Chemical Society Award and also qualified for the state fair in Chemistry.

·      Tristin Bryant and Zilynn Skelton of BHL Middle finished first in the Earth and Environmental Sciences category.

·      Emma Arenales of Clarke Middle finished first in the Environmental Engineering category and won an American Chemical Society Award.

·      Henry Wojdynski of Clarke Middle finished first in the Mathematics category.

·      Elise Newman and Georgia McKown of Clarke Middle finished first in the Microbiology category. Their project also won the Jackson EMC Pinnacle Award.

·      Alex Call of Clarke Middle finished first in the Plant Science category.

 

Senior Division (high schools)

 

·      Grayson Oliver and Israel Ortiz of Cedar Shoals won first place in the Plant Science category and won the Piedmont Rising Researchers Award.

·      Angel Jones and Savannah Rawls of Cedar Shoals won second place in the Animal Science category.
