West Broad building exterior

The Clarke County School District invites the Athens-Clarke County community to participate in a public design charrette for the West Broad School Complex revitalization project on Tuesday, March 31, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Vernon Payne Meeting Hall at the District Office, 595 Prince Avenue, Athens.

The design charrette will focus on:

  • Understanding the existing conditions of the three buildings on the property

  • Exploring renovation options that would support instructional space for a planned construction career pathway for CCSD high school students

  • Practicing industry-aligned problem solving

  • Engaging participants in authentic construction planning

  • Producing early concepts that will inform architects, engineers, and district leaders as the project progresses.

The district has proposed expanding academic programming offered to CCSD high school students through the Athens Community Career Academy (ACCA), which would include the creation of a new construction career pathway, in keeping with local companies’ support for such a pathway and market research identifying construction as a strong local pathway for high school graduate employment. A “heritage room” honoring local educational history has also been proposed, along with additional multi-purpose meeting rooms, community greenspace, and other historical markers.

The district has provided regular public updates since announcing these plans in December 2025. In addition to the charrette on March 31, a building committee with ACCA, Clarke County Board of Education, and at-large community representation is also being formed. The committee’s meetings will be open to the public, and meeting dates will be announced as they are finalized.
