Yesterday, our 4th and 5th-grade classroom finalists showed off their spelling skills in our schoolwide spelling bee, and WOW did they impress us all! Our second graders LOVE making word chains after guided reading groups! 📝✨ It’s Science of Reading in action—and it’s as fun as it is powerful! 🚀 Here’s the magic: Word chains (or word ladders) help students connect the sounds they hear to the letters they see. This process, called orthographic mapping, is essential for learning to read and write. By changing just one sound at a time (like sat → sit → pit → pat), students practice blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds, which strengthens their decoding and spelling skills. 🧠💡 Why does this matter? When kids master the connection between speech sounds and their letter representations, they unlock thousands of words—no guessing needed! 🏆 This hands-on, interactive practice solidifies speech-to-print connections, creating confident, independent readers. 🍂 Thanksgiving Blessing Bag Donation Drive! 🍂 This Thanksgiving, we’re embracing our Leader in Me spirit and practicing Think Win-Win by joining together to give back! Thanks to the inspiration of our 4th-grade Principal’s Council member, Atiyah Thomas, we’re collecting items to create blessing bags for Athens’ homeless community. Donations are accepted in the front office through November 15th. Items needed include scarves, gloves, socks, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bottled water, and individually wrapped snacks. It’s also a friendly competition—first place wins a pizza party, second place wins popcorn, and third place gets cookies!
