Our second graders LOVE making word chains after guided reading groups! 📝✨ It’s Science of Reading in action—and it’s as fun as it is powerful! 🚀 Here’s the magic: Word chains (or word ladders) help students connect the sounds they hear to the letters they see. This process, called orthographic mapping, is essential for learning to read and write. By changing just one sound at a time (like sat → sit → pit → pat), students practice blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds, which strengthens their decoding and spelling skills. 🧠💡 Why does this matter? When kids master the connection between speech sounds and their letter representations, they unlock thousands of words—no guessing needed! 🏆 This hands-on, interactive practice solidifies speech-to-print connections, creating confident, independent readers.
