It Takes a Village: The Clarke County Mentor Program is seeking community members to become mentors to a CCSD students and make a difference in their lives. Mentors act as a role model and friend; they encourage positive choices, promote high self-esteem, and support academic achievement. Mentors visit their assigned “mentee” at school, ideally once each week during the school year, for a meal, game, academic help, school program, and conversation. Superintendent Dr. Robbie Hooker checked in on his mentee yesterday on the first day of school and encourages anyone looking to make an impact to start the process of becoming a mentor today. Learn more about the program requirements and the application process at clarkecountymentorprogram.org.

FIRST DAY OF NEW OPPORTUNITY These Cedar Shoals High School students arrived to their first day of school yesterday and became some of the first group of students to become part of the Center for Readiness in English and Career Education, or CRECE. CRECE is a program beginning in CCSD this school year and has the overarching mission of providing transitional support and opportunities to students, families, and community members new to Athens from outside the United States to grow and flourish as students as well as members of our community. CRECE offers half-day morning and afternoon core and elective courses for high school-aged newcomer English Learners (ELs) from both Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central high schools for a maximum of two semesters. Give a warm welcome to these students as we wish them the greatest success as they join us in CCSD! #CCSD2024 #BetterTogether #ThrivingStudents

1 Day to Go!
Families and community members: Help us get the school year off to a successful start tomorrow by driving ALERT on the roads! •Watch for students and families in crosswalks, and slow down to avoid costly fines. •Do NOT pass a bus with its stop arm extended. •Be patient as there will be more traffic back on the roads in the morning and afternoon. •Plan ahead. To be early is to be on time!

Congratulations to the Clarke Middle SEAT team for attending the 44th Annual NEED Youth Energy Conference and Awards and earning two additional awards this summer! These Clarke Middle students spent much of their 2023-24 school year engaged in learning and teaching about science and the environment as part of Audrey Hughes and Javan Winston’s classrooms and extracurricular programs. The Clarke Middle Science, Energy, & Adventure Team’s project, "Action and Advocacy for Energy Education and Sustainability", was reviewed by The NEED Project’s National Review Panel and selected for top awards as the Georgia School of the Year and National Junior Level School of the Year! While at the NEED Project Youth Energy Conference this summer, the team won an additional 2 awards: Best Presentation and Most Energy Efficient Design for their conference challenge work. Congratulations to these extraordinary students and their teachers for their incredible success!

WORKING TOGETHER: Preparation is key, and CCSD nurses took that message to the district bus garage today where they trained bus drivers and monitors on how to respond if a medical emergency occurs on a bus. We hope they don't encounter any on their buses this year, but if they do, they will be prepared to act. Great job by these dedicated employees of demonstrating that, at CCSD, we are always Better Together!

CCSD families, You may see these "No Phone Zone" signs this upcoming school year at your student's school. These are updated guidelines for the 2024-25 school year to improve student engagement, decrease distractions, and overall, improve the educational experience in our classrooms. As the 2024-25 school year is about to begin, CCSD middle school students will be asked to leave phones in their lockers during instructional time, while high school students will be asked to either keep their phones in their backpacks, or place them in pouches inside their classrooms. #CCSD2024 #BetterTogether
